HAWTHORNE "NEBRASKA" MOVIE
Not many communities in Nebraska, much less anywhere, can say they were the key location for a film nominated for six Academy Awards.
But Plainview can.
Academy Award-winning director and Nebraska native Alexander Payne filmed much of "Nebraska" in Plainview, Nebraska, in the fall of 2012.
"Nebraska" stars Bruce Dern, Will Forte, June Squibb and Bob Odenkirk. Shot in black and white, the film centers Bruce Dern's character, who believes he's won a sweepstakes ticket and must travel from his Billings, Montana, home to Lincoln to collect his winnings. His son (Will Forte) joins him on this journey that detours through Hawthorne, Nebraska, the father's hometown.

Plainview was transformed into the fictional Hawthorne. Being authentic was important to Payne.
“I want to get things just as they are,” Payne told The Telegraph, in the United Kingdom. “I don’t want to box myself into a particular style for the rest of my career, but until now I’ve been interested in getting and trusting what’s real. Reality is already fantastic enough. And so in this movie, Nebraska, really very little is changed from how it naturally occurs. The town of Plainview, Nebraska is exactly as shown, except that the newspaper office is a little bit different and I put in a tanning salon, ‘Monster Tan’.”

Twenty-one Nebraskans were cast in roles with an additional 227 hired as extras. Fifty-six crew members worked on the film, and security personnel were on location for 36 days. And a significant portion of the film's $13.5 million budget was spent in Nebraska
Other communities feature in the film included Stanton, Elgin, Tilden, Osmond, Hooper, Lyons and Lincoln.
